You ask an excellent question. On top of my seven years working in traditional sales, I've also gained three years of cold-calling experience, 6 months of experience in real estate, as well as two years of experience operating a multi-level-marketing business.
I've learned that the key to success in any form of sales is to build a relationship with the customer. If they don't know you, then it should be your responsibility to get to know them.
Before introducing my product, first, I ask quality questions to better understand my client's needs, which helps with overcoming objections. It's hard for somebody to say no when you can give examples of why they need your product; simply be reiterating what they already told you.
